The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. is sponsoring a Going Green Sustainability Lecture: “The 2021 Galveston Bay Report Card: What it tells us and how we can protect the Bay”. The presentation will be seen on Zoom on Thursday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m.
The Galveston Bay Foundation and the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) have published the Galveston Bay Report Card on the overall health of the Bay. The Bay is an important economic and ecosystem component of the Houston region. The report card calls attention to what puts Galveston Bay at risk and includes recommendations on how people can help preserve the Bay.
The Woodlands area is upstream of Galveston Bay and thus affects it. This lecture and discussion will focus on the recent analysis of the quality of the Bay, why it is important, and what actions can be taken in The Woodlands area to help.

Erin Kinney, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at HARC specializing in coastal and wetland ecology. Her research interests include wetland restoration, impacts of land use and eutrophication on coastal systems, and carbon and nitrogen cycling in wetlands.

En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator – How to Use

The En-ROADS simulator allows users to test strategies to address climate change via an interactive on-line tool. The simulator is over 10 years in the making, and has been co-developed by Climate Interactive and the MIT Sustainability Initiative. It is a hopeful, scientifically-grounded, peer-reviewed and action-oriented experience for anyone wanting to explore how human actions and government policies can impact the climate crisis. En-ROADS workshops have been run for the U.S. Congress, the Energy Transition Forum in London, HSBC bank, the U.S. Climate Action Network, the UN Secretary-General’s Office, and many others.
Roger will give an overview of the En-ROADS simulator and how it can be used as a role-play game, or a policy workshop. Attendees will be able to explore for themselves the consequences of energy choices, economic growth, land use, and other policies and uncertainties, with the goal of improving their understanding of the many factors impacting climate. Speaker: Roger Ingersoll a Woodlands, Civil/Geotechnical engineer who after 33 years retired from ExxonMobil where he worked on arctic, coastal, and offshore projects worldwide. Roger has been a member of Citizens’ Climate Education and Citizens’ Climate Lobby, is Co-group Leader and Grasstops Lead of TX08 Woodlands-Huntsville Chapter, and active in CCL’s Conservative Caucus, and Catholic Action Teams.

Bill Bass is lover of nature and a most excellent and avid photographer. In his talk, he will bring both to us in the form of a slide show that will emphasize the importance of preserving our natural spaces, and images of the Spring Creek Nature Trail, a 14-mile, multi-use path along Spring Creek offering stunning views and a chance to see nature “up close”. Our speaker, Ms. Rachel Windham, will discuss the interconnectivity of local watersheds and some of the common challenges impacting the quality of water in lakes, streams, and other water bodies throughout the region, including our own Spring Creek. She will also outline strategies for responding to these challenges that can be carried out at individual, local, and regional levels. As an example, she will highlight progress made by the Spring Creek Watershed Partnership—a community led organization working to improve water quality in Spring Creek and its tributaries through the development of a Watershed Protection Plan. Rachel will also tell us how we as individuals can have input into the process and what we can do to help implement the Plan.
Ms. Windham is a Planner in the Community and Environmental department at the Houston-Galveston Area Council. Since joining the department in 2019, she has worked on watershed projects focused on improving water quality through reductions in contaminant loads from point and non-point sources. By disseminating data-driven water quality management strategies to area stakeholders and state partners, she coordinates public participation in watershed protection. Before joining the Houston-Galveston Area Council, Rachel accrued over 10 years of experience as a researcher on multiple water quality and environmental projects in the Lower Galveston Bay Watershed. She is a proud alum of the Texas A&M University Galveston Campus where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology and Master of Marine Resources Management degrees.

The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. is sponsoring a Going Green Sustainability Lecture titled “2020 Galveston Bay Report Card; How We Can Help” to be held via Zoom at 7:00 pm, Thursday, February 25, 2021. Dr. Erin Kinney, Houston Advanced Research Center (“HARC”) will be our guest speaker.

Dr. Kinney will be presenting on the most recent annual Galveston Bay Report Card and how the Bay is connected to local creeks, rivers, and bayous.. Dr. Kinney will be covering what we can learn about the impacts of Spring Creek and the West and East Forks of the San Jacinto River watersheds on the Bay and what each of us can do to protect our waterways, our watersheds, and ultimately the Galveston Bay ecosystem.
Dr. Kinney is a Research Scientist at HARC, specializing in coastal and wetland ecology. Her research interests include wetland restoration, impacts of land use and eutrophication on coastal systems, and carbon and nitrogen cycling in wetlands. Erin graduated with a PhD in biology from the Boston University Marine Program and a BA in environmental and evolutionary biology from Dartmouth College. She previously worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the department of marine biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston and at the Ecosystem Center at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA.
